Black Panther Originally Had A Half-Mask?

Here is a great post about comic book rumors. The post covers more than one but this one is my favorite:

COMIC LEGEND: Jack Kirby originally drew the Black Panther as wearing a mask that did not cover his entire face, even after the Panther's first appearance!
STATUS: True

The author makes a great  discussion on how Black Panther's depiction has changed throughout the almost 50 years the character has been around. I never really thought that there was a time when Black Panther was supposed to have a half mask. This means that the portrayal of Panther in the animated Ultimate Avengers 2  is actually more along the lines of what Jack Kirby had in mind. I had not idea.

Gene Luen Yang to Boycott 'The Last Airbender' Movie Over 'Yellowface' - ComicsAlliance | Comics culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews

Comics Alliance has posted a great article. An Asian American named Gene Luen Yang has pointed out something that I missed.  Anyone who has seen  the animated series on which The Last Airbender is based knows that the characters are not Caucasian....they are Asian. Then why are the characters being played by white actors? I don't blame Yang for being angry.  I wouldn't like it if Blade was played by a white guy. Why should Ang? Unfortunately Hollywood really does think that Asian actors can't carry a movie like this and make money. I don't believe that for a minute. I'm going to have to give some serious thought to if I should join Yang's boycott. It's a slap in the face to the original source material and I'm shocked that I missed it. I see why. I was dazzled by the trailer.

Here is a great list of the actors rumored to be poised to take over for Tobey McGuire as Spider-Man in the next crop of movies. Looking at the available actors I think the role should go to Josh Hutcherson

Why Iron Man Is The Gen Y Superhero

Jon Favreau at the Austin, TX premiere of I Lo...Image via Wikipedia
There is an interesting quote from Iron Man 2 director, Jon Favreau.

The first 21st century superhero is a hedonistic, narcissistic, even nihilistic, adrenaline junkie, billionaire entrepreneur do-gooder. If Peter Parker's life lesson is that "with great power comes great responsibility," Tony Stark's is that with great power comes a shit-ton of fun.
You can't get any more Gen Y than that.
.I'm preparing a new post about the theological implications of a statements like these.

Luke Cage: A One-Man Harlem Renaissance - ComicsAlliance | Comics culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews

Here is a great article charting the character development of Marvel Comics, Luke Cage - Power Man. I've always like him. He is one of the first major black superheroes. Watching the history of the character is to watch the evolution of how black men have been portrayed in the mass media over the past 40 years. I agree with the last paragraph of the article:

Almost forty years after his creation, Cage has managed to become a rising star. Respected by Marvel's greatest hero, led the foremost super-hero team, and now he's in charge of whipping villains into heroes in Jeff Parker and Kev Walker's 'Thunderbolts.' Not a bad run for a guy who started out as a Harlem gangbanger and blaxploitation cash grab, is it?

'Iron Man: Armored Adventures' Gets a Second Season on Nicktoons - ComicsAlliance | Comics culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews

The good news Iron Man: Armored Adventures has been renewed for another 26 episodes. I don't get why it won't be out in September. It's scheduled for 2011. I think the series has turned out better than I thought. I just don't like the thought of Iron Man as a teenager. It didn't work in the Comics, but then it was teen Tony ripped from the past to replace his adult self who committed suicide after trying to destroy the Avengers because he was under Kang's control. Yeah, my feeling about an animated series focusing on Iron Man and his cast as teens are conflicted. I think it works better for Spider-man

5 Lessons To Learn From Heroes’ Failure « Spinoff Online – Covering TV, Film and Entertainment News Daily

Overall Performance Ratings of wikipedia:en:He...Image via Wikipedia
This is a great article analyzing what killed the series Heroes. I largely agree with the points made. I don't agree that Peter, Sylar, or Hiro were too powerful. I also think Clare and Noah's father/daughter relationship we way too much like a yoyo. I also think Clare kept making silly mistakes from not listening to what adults were telling her.

THE INTERSECTION | MADNESS & REALITY: Booty poppin' lil white girls? See what you did Beyonce?

I've heard of a video of scantily clad little white girls dancing to black culture...and it bothered me, but after reading this post, I had to comment. Our society has a problem when we allow little girls to be sexualized in this way. I don't want my 3 year-old daughter doing this. I don't blame Beyonce. I blame our culture that is so much more concerned with money and sex that we allow children to emulate our issues. What else would they do but copy us?
