San Diego Comic-Con 2010: Women of Marvel Panel Liveblog

Here is the live-blog transcript of the panel where women who work for Marvel talk about the comic book industry from their point-of-view. Turns out that the comic book industry is not immune to sexism.

The Best and Worst Super-Heroines In Comics! [Girl Week]

Comics Alliance has posted a great post rating some of the most well known female comic book characters. I thought that many great characters were listed: She-Hulk, Wonder Woman, Batwoman, Catwoman, Kitty Pryde, Black Cat, and Power Girl. I was missing Spider-girl, Storm, Jean Grey, Wasp, and a few others. Maybe they will do a sequel post. What impressed me most was the female character in the post who got the highest score: Amanda Waller. I don't know much about her outside of what was in the Justice League animated series and Batman/Supeman: Public Enemies animated movie.

AMANDA WALLER

As the leader of the Suicide Squad, Amanda Waller isn't just the toughest woman in comics, she's bar-none one of the toughest characters in comics. Not only is Waller -- who has no super-powers save for utter cunning ruthlessness -- hard enough to boss around a group of hardened super-villains into going on suicide missions for the Government (which more often than not leave at least one member of the team dead), when Batman comes to shut down the operation that's pardoning super-criminals, she's one of the few characters to stand up to DC's ultimate badass in a battle of wills... and win.
She got the highest score.

Power Girl Lectures Women for Complaining About Her Costume

Here is a great article talking about how art should address culture. I admit that comics and movies and television objectify women and treats them as sex objects. Thankfully, it's becoming taboo to all such characterizations stand..A balance between still using sex to sell things, yet not being so overt to denigrate women is attempting to be struck. This tension is seen most superheroine costumes and I think the one character this is brought out most is with DC Comic's Power Girl. Her costume has always been provocative and controversial. See the picture on the right? Some people are offended by it. Personally, being male, it's never bothered me...I should probably have that checked.  In a recent comic book, an attempted response to to the critics of the costume is made in the story. Some people liker the writer of the post linked below, were offended and felt like DC Comics was triying to defend the costume. But if you look at the comic book page itself, it's played for laughs in my opinion.

I found the following image that sums up one-side of the debate.

Black SuperHero Blog: Astrea

I don't remember Astrea! I'm so bummed. A  black female superhero on network TV and I can't remember?!  Okay, I have to cut myself a little slack because I was 3 yrs old at the time. However according to the link to this post she was part of a show that aired with Tarzan and the Super 7 which I do remember watching on CBS. I'm glad this was posted with a video. Of course I'm also glad they are going to release this stuff on DVD. It  may jog a memory.
