Mac vs PC - Transformers Style

I have posted this video on YouTube before but I could not resist calling attention to it again. "Awesome" is not a good enough word to describe this video. Is it me or is the Mac the heroic Autobot and the PC is the evil Decepticon?

Also you can find out about version 2 at the official website.

Does Obama Make It Better for Blacks In Hollywood?

I read an article on the Black Snob blog which quotes Bill Cosby and Mara Brock Akil, who created the TV shows Girlfriends and The Game, commenting on how President Obama being black will affect how black people are shown through Hollywood. In my opinon, nothing has changed much.

“(T)hese people are stupid,” (Cosby) says, referring to network bosses. “Look at how NBC is struggling. You would think they would make some changes and be talking about trying to get another ‘Cosby’ kind of show. But they would probably die before putting another show on about a black family and black pride.”

Brock Akil, however, has a bit more hope for the network that also aired the groundbreaking show “Julia” (1968-71), with Diahann Carroll; and “Fresh Prince of Bel-Air” (1990-96), with Will Smith. NBC recently bought from her a script based on a book by Nick Adams called “Making Friends With Black People.” It’s a buddy comedy that focuses on the state of race relations in the U.S.

“In our pitch to NBC, we referenced Obama,” says Brock Akil. “We talked about how he has gotten us to the table to talk about race in a meaningful way and it’s time to continue the discussion. So our new president has already had an impact.”

Movie Review: Transformers Revenge of the Fallen

Well, I finally saw Transformers 2 and I really, really enjoyed it! It was fun, non-stop action. It had more of Optimus Prime and Megatron than the first one and I was pleased. If you have not seen it, I'd suggest you see it as soon as possible...especially if you can see it in IMAX. I've read the negative criticisms and I've got to ask did these yahoos see the same movie I saw? The only thing I did not like I would have liked to see more backstory and characterization on some of the new Autobots and Decepticons. For example there were 2 female autobots who transformed into motorcycles. We were not formerly introduced to them but they looked really cool in their action sequences. I don't want to give away the movie but there was a Decepticon Pretender (yes, think of the toy line from the late 80's) but we are given no explanation for her either. I also have to admit there were somethings in the story that I did not get. I'm not sure if it's because I missed it or if there were plot holes. None of this distracted from my enjoying the movie. I did not go see it, expecting to see something that everyone would think is Oscar-winning. I went because I wanted to see giant robots kicking the tar out of each other in ways I've never seen before. Michael Bay and company more than delivered. Revenge of the Fallen is definitely better than the first movie and I didn't think that was possible. I look forward to the next one!

The other thing that I want to mention is that some people thought the twin Autobots, Mudflap and Skids, were stereotypical and racist. I disagree. I was not offended at all. I thought that they were funny. I enjoyed all the characters. They weren't just comedy relief but they were really good fighters. I would have liked to have seen more interaction among the Autobots with each other and Decepticons among themselves.

I would have liked to see more of the character Sideswipe. He was really, really cool!

Watch This: I Got Next: A Documentary on the Fighting Game Scene

There is a new movie documentary competitive gaming focusing on Street Fighter IV. I found out about it from the G4TV blog. Here is the report"

Curious about the fighting game tournament scene? You've seen gootecks on G4tv.com and X-Play (Balrog Tutorial, Pro Tips) and want to know more about why he does what he does? You'll need to check out I Got Next: A Documentary on the Fighting Game Scene, which looks at the growing Street Fighter IV competitive community. Granted, the players you'll see in this video have been playing since long before SFIV was released, but the spotlight is on SFIV and for good reason.

The movie will be premiering this Friday night at 8PM EST on UFragTV, streaming live and for free. Afterwards, there will be a live-streamed Q&A with Ryan "gootecks" Gutierrez, Justin Wong, and Mike Ross. The film was written, directed, and produced by Ian Cofino.

I've seen an early copy of the film and if you're at all interested in competitive gaming, fighting games, or Street Fighter IV you should check it out. At the very least, check out the trailer at the film's official site.

G4TV - The Feed: Games As Art: The Debate Continues

I ran across a very interesting post from the G4TV blog. It's about the ongoing debate between those who see video games as art and those who don't.

If you're ready for some deep thinking this Wednesday morning, head over to Gamasutra and check out Scott Foe's opinion piece on whether games are Art, with a capital "A".

The creator of Reset Generation, has some answers for Roger Ebert and other cultural critics who feel games can't be Art. As you've probably guessed, Foe says, "Yes. Games are Art." Here's the money quote:

"Saying, 'Games aren't art,' is like saying, 'Girls don't fart.' It's pointless to argue with that sentiment. Both movies and games are the product of deliberately arranging elements in a way that appeals to the senses and emotions. In a movie, anything can happen; in a game, everything can happen.

Good point... although my illusions about girls are forever ruined. I seriously doubt most gamers care whether games are "Art" or not, but it's important. Many gamers don't think past their initial reaction to a title: If it's fun, it's a good game and thus, aAt. But it's how you make the fun in a video game that creates the Art. A game being Art and a game being good are the same thing. The reason you like Grand Theft Auto IV more than you like 50 Cent: Bulletproof is because GTA is just better Art.

As Foe points out, a great game combines visual artistry, audio artistry, narrative artistry, thespianism, and design and technological ingenuity. There's no separating the parts from the whole. If every piece fits together perfectly, you get a great game, and great art. Like a bad actor ruining an otherwise good film, if one part of the puzzle is missing or off, you usually end up with a half-assed or sucky game/piece of art.

What do yo think? Do you even care whether some cultural critics consider games and Art mutually exclusive?

Source

Of course video games are a form of art. Historically, it took a while for snooty snobs to stop looking down their noses at movies and television and accept those as art. I assume that the theater had the same hurdle to jump. In the middle ages actors were looked down on not worshipped. I wonder how the first writers, painters, and musicians were received by their peers? Somehow, I don't think they were embraced or appreciated as treasured artists at first, no matter how talented they were.

Olivia Munn has a Role in Iron Man 2

This is the second report i have seen: Olivia Munn is in Iron Man 2. However it seems that no on is spilling the beans as to what that role is. I really would like to know. Here is a comment she made about being on the set:

"All my scenes (in Iron Man 2) are with Robert Downey and one other actor. I don't know how much I can say," she says. "We were (improvising) nd it came to me (to say a line) … (Later) Robert said, 'Can we just stop a second and give Olivia a round of applause. She is rocking it. That made me feel good."

She is a great actress, in my opinion, and here is a clip from the show she works on Attack of the Show. Sometimes she does skits and parodies and this one where she tries out to be come a "Bond" girl. Hilarity ensues!

Captain America Reborn

It is being announced that Marvel Comics is finally bringing back Steve Rogers. Steve Rogers is Captain America and he was assassinated at the end of the Marvel Civil War storyline from 2006. Steve Rogers has been replaced by his now grown-up junior partner "Bucky" Barnes. I've been waiting for Steve Rogers to return. I think some characters are iconic and their alter egos should not be changed. Captain America is Steve Rogers. Batman is Bruce Wayne. Spider-man is Peter Parker. Superman is Clark Kent. Daredevil is Matthew Murdock. While it may be fun to have someone else in the costume, the man cannot be replaced. There is even an animated trailer below from Marvel.com.

"Civil War Online" is up and running...

Marvel.com has announced that a new online strategy game can be played online on the Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 website. The hope is that it will fill the void before the main game comes out. Here is a more fuller description of "Civil War Online"

Each hero has their different strengths, weaknesses and special abilities so choosing a good team is half the battle. From there, heroes race around blasting, kicking and smashing their enemies across a gameboard littered with powerups and exploding objects. Combat is turn-based with fast characters attacking first while the heavy hitters, a bit slower, pack a far more serious punch. It all comes down to superior strategy and once the dust settles, it's the last man standing that claims victory for their side.

Heroes Season 4 Rumor

On one of the websites that I like to read it is being rumored that Claire may be involved in a lesbian relationship in Season4. The only reason that such a move could even be considered is ratings. We are living in an age where television shows often have at least one gay character. Such a move, especially where there can be girl-on-girl romance portrayed, would definitely make a lot of people tune in just for that. Homosexuality is not something that needs to be portrayed in the show. I don't think it's necessary at all...just tell better stories. I like volume 4 except for the ending...killing Nathan and then having Parkman mind wipe Sylar to replace him I think was a bad idea. In my opinion, they should have just used Claire's blood to heal him. You can watch any episode from season 3 in the viewer in the sidebar.
