Black Panther battles ethics - Los Angeles Times

Here is an article that I can't believe I missed. July 26, 2008, Greg Braxton, Times Staff Writer, wrote an article saying that Reginald Hudlin using his influence as an executive at BET to bring Black Panther to the network as an animated series could be an ethical problem.

But in greenlighting "The Black Panther" for its planned premiere early next year, Hudlin has ignited ethical questions on whether his personal involvement in the TV series benefits him financially while also clashing with his responsibilities as a network chief.
In press materials, he is listed as an executive producer on "The Black Panther" along with Denys Cowan, senior vice president of animation for BET Networks. Hudlin will also receive at least a story credit for the six episodes that have been ordered thus far, which are based on installments he wrote for Marvel.
Hudlin declined to answer questions this week about whether he was being paid specifically for producing or writing "The Black Panther," and whether he would participate in possible future sales of the animated series to other outlets or consumers. Other executives at Viacom-owned BET also refused to comment on the project.
Some ethics experts who were contacted about the matter speculated on whether Hudlin's treatment of "The Black Panther" represents a potential conflict of interest.

"This does raise the question of impropriety," said C. Kerry Fields, a business law and ethics professor at the USC Marshall School of Business. "This deal doesn't seem to have the sense of impartiality it should have. It certainly raises the issue of whether the board of directors for the network is exercising sufficient oversight. The cost, network support, advertising and its placement in the program lineup are all things he controls."

When I read this I couldn't believe it. What? I mean Hudlin is executive producer. Why shouldn't he get paid?! The other thing is that we consider is the fact that if Hudlin did not have the power he wielded at BET, the show would not exist at all! If Hudlin were white and the Black Panther was a white character, I don't think anyone would be asking about ethics.

THE INTERSECTION | MADNESS & REALITY: Can it be that Halle Berry is just as bad at picking crappy men as the rest of you?

This article is interesting. The blogger attempts to understand the futility of Halle Berry's love life. I mean the blogger brings up some great points about how she has become an icon of what beauty is - not just black women but all women. I was amazed to find out that the man she has a baby with has just broken up with her. I don't know the specifics but it does make me wonder: What is wrong with him? I know Halle is only human and it can't always be the man's fault. I used to think it was always the man's fault...but then I got old enough to date. Women are just as clueless and fallible as we are. That being said I know it takes 1 person to ruin a relationship but it takes 3 to make it work. It takes one because all the man or woman has to do is give up on their spouse. However the only way to successfully navigate the rigors of being and staying married is through the power of God. Where did Halle go wrong? When I first heard that she was dating Gabriel Aubrey, ended up pregnant, and said that she would never marry again, I was saddened because she was making a conscious decision to ignore God's way and do things as she thought was right. I don't care who you are, but doing what is right in your own eyes not God's will invariably cause you pain.

As for the blogger's reasoning as to why Halle's relationship failed, he offered that maybe she wasn;t really that good at sex. I wonder if he saw Monster's Ball, because if he did, you got to know that it's probably wasn't that, and she was faking it in the movie.

Black Panther Animated Series

As you may be aware the first two episodes of the Black Panther Animated Series debuted this last weekend but only in Australia. I have no idea why. It is an insult...almost makes me wanna declare war and say mean things about Australia, but I'll let it go. It is unfair to blame Australia and I'm not gonna go on a tirade accusing Hollywood of racism because the Black Panther is black and the voice cast is mostly black but I sure would like to know why it did not air in the United States first! Why James Rhodes Is Comics' Ideal Black Hero - iron man - io9

Here is an excellent article discussing and analyzing why War Machine is the best example of a black superhero based on stereotypes.

a. He's A Sidekick At Heart
b. He's A Replacement
c. He's "Edgy"
d. He's A Cyborg  

I had mixed feelings about the article. While War Machine does fit the stereotypes as the article's author suggests, I see more in him than these four things. In the comics he has a standard...a code...that he lives by and he does not compromise them. Over the past 10 years most of the problems Iron Man has had has been because he compromised his principles although he thought he was working for the greater good. Rhodey, as War Machine, sticks to his principles no matter what it costs him. This is why I consider him a great hero.

Black SuperHero Blog: Remember That Kiss?

This was a great post reminding us that Justice League Unlimited was ground breaking and more than just a Children's action cartoon. I mean how many interracial couples can you truly name on television and to see them actually kiss? I can only think of about 4 or 5 couples where a black person and a white person have been shown kissing on television. Hawkgirl and Green Lantern is one of them.

Black SuperHero Blog: Astrea

I don't remember Astrea! I'm so bummed. A  black female superhero on network TV and I can't remember?!  Okay, I have to cut myself a little slack because I was 3 yrs old at the time. However according to the link to this post she was part of a show that aired with Tarzan and the Super 7 which I do remember watching on CBS. I'm glad this was posted with a video. Of course I'm also glad they are going to release this stuff on DVD. It  may jog a memory.
