Mortal Kombat Movie Announced - G4tv.com

Remember that really great Web series about Mortal Kombat earlier this year? There was some hope that if it turned out well, Warner Bros would get get the same team responsible for a big-budget feature. It was announced that we would get exactly that!

Superman Man Of Steel Gets Laurence Fishburne - G4tv.com

Okay, I was shocked and amazed. Not in a bad way. But I never thought Warner Bros would cast Perry White as a black man even if that black man is Lawrence Fishburne. Wha? Remember the fall out when a black man was cast as Hemdall in the Thor movie? This is different. First the public loves Fishburne and like Edris can play roles that aren't necessarily intended for black people. I still think that the naysayers and critics are just being racist. I think it says something when a character transcends race. This isn't the first time a character who has traditionally been portrayed by white men has been played by a black actor. I think Fishburne will do an awesome job because he is a great actor. For example in the Matrix trilogy, there really isn't any reason why Morpheus had to be played by a black man. Fishburne was picked because of the skills and talents he has as an actor. This is the reason why I think he was picked to play Perry White in the next Superman movie.

Jeri Ryan To Return in Mortal Kombat Feature Film ReelComix

Mortal KombatImage by BlogDeManu via Flickr
This is good news. Turns out that Warner Bros is not stupid!!! A few months ago there was a fan-made film based on Mortal Kombat. At first no one was sure if it was a real official trailer or fan made - it was that that good. Fortunately, not only has the studio commissioned the movie to be made but they are bringing on Jeri Ryan and Michael Jai White, who were in the fan film, are going to be in the movie! And they got the guy who made the fan film - Kevin Tancharoen.

Joss Whedon Reacts to Terrible 'Buffy' Remake News - ComicsAlliance | Comics culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews

Buffy the Vampire Slayer annual 2004 coverImage by Scorpions and Centaurs via Flickr
Joss Whedon at the premiere of Serenity (film)Image via WikipediaYesterday, I've heard that Warner Brothers has decided to make a new Buffy: The Vampire Slayer movie. The bad news? No Joss Whedon or any of the idea or concepts he brought to the Movie, television series, or comic books. Without him creating, directing, or producing the franchise would not have worked! I mean the movie was a dud at time. The studio did not know what it had. I bet it is gonna be like Blade...just wait and see. Which means it won't work for Buffy. I liked the way Whedon summed up his comment:

I always hoped that Buffy would live on even after my death. But, you know, AFTER. I don't love the idea of my creation in other hands, but I'm also well aware that many more hands than mine went into making that show what it was. And there is no legal grounds for doing anything other than sighing audibly.

I'm not sure if I'd be able to be that classy. I'll lend my audible sigh to his. And I think David Boreanaz's (who starred in Buffy and it's spinoff Ange1) tweeted picture sums up my feeling exacty!

Warner Bros. Releases First 'Jonah Hex' Animated Short Stills - ComicsAlliance | Comics culture, news, humor, commentary, and reviews

Well, it looks like I have another reason to get Batman: Under the Red Hood. I like the idea of more Jonah Hex in Animation because I've enjoyed the character in Batman: the Animated Series, Justice League Unlimited, and Batman: Brave and the Bold. I sure hope the animated short doesn't stink.

Warner Bros. Acquires 'Arkham Asylum' Game Company

I just found out that Warner Bros has gained control of Rocksteady Studios - the video game company responsible for last year's hit Batman:Arkham Asylum. It is obvious why they did this given that Warner Bros owns Batman and DC Comics. I think it was a good move. Batman:Arkham Asylum is arguably one of the best games - ever; not just a good Batman game. It is THE Batman game. I would like to see what Rocksteady can do with other characters like Superman, the Flash, Green Lantern, and Wonder Woman.

Christopher Nolan Explains His Philosophy On Comic Book Movies | Viva La Geek

Christopher NolanImage via Wikipedia
It is being reported that Chris Nolan, the man who breathed new life into the Batman franchise, has been asked to help reboot the Superman franchise. Here is what I found at the link at the end.
While the terms of his tutelage still remain vague as to how it will affect the franchise moving forward, fans might be able to get an idea of what to expect based on Nolan’s previous cinematic works. Way back in 2008 during the junket for “The Dark Knight” MTV News had a chance to discuss Nolan’s philosophy on the genre of comic book movies and whether the film was a superhero movie or just a movie that happens to have superheroes.

This week’s announcement of Christopher Nolan’s involvement in the newly rebooted Warner Brothers “Superman” franchise has reinvigorated the interest in seeing another Man of Steel flick come to the big screen. With one massively successful DC reboot under the director’s belt, it’s clear that the studio hopes that Christopher Nolan still has the Midas touch.

“I think of it as a film that just exists in the cinematic realm,” said Nolan, “I don’t think of it as a comic book movie or just a comic book movie — and that’s something that in the whole process — where from the screenwriting point of view or the production point of view and with all departments and everything we would never let people off the hook with the notion ‘it’s a comic book movie.’”

“We just tried to make a movie that stands as a movie,” he added. “The fact that it happens to be based on a long history of this comic book character I think is irrelevant — I think it’s on us to make a great movie and not rely on the fact that it’s a comic book movie or excuse certain things because it’s a comic book movie. We didn’t want to do either; we just wanted to make as great of a movie that we possibly could.”

Marvel Could Own 'Superman' In 2013

Shock!

DC ComicsImage via Wikipedia

Awe!

Okay, I just read an article on the World of Superheroes blog. IKt made me think. For those of you had not heard DC Comics (owned by Time-Warner) will loose the copywrite for Superman in 2013. The rights will go to the Siegel/Shuster estate (creators of Superman). I hadn;'t thought about it but it could mean that DC Comics will no longer be able to publish Superman or for Warner Brothers to make Superman movies and television shows. Disney could buy the rights right from under Warner Brothers and add Superman to Marvel's stable of characters. It's a rather provocative thought.

EXCLUSIVE: Warner Bros' Jeff Robinov Restructures DC Comics; Diane Nelson Put In Charge Of DC Business; DC Titles In Development Pulled From Producers

Wanna bet that the restructuring at DC Comics/Warner Bros. is a direct response to Disney acquiring Marvel comics? Me too. Sure bet. I don't blame them. With the power of Disney behind Marvel, combined with blockbuster movies and animation Marvel has been churning out since 1998, they could bury DC Comics. And let's not forget DC looses the copyright to Superman in 2013. Don't get me wrong DC Comics publishes some of the most iconic, awesome fictional characters ever published. However it has failed to capitalize in other media (except animation since 1992) such as video games and live-action movies. DC Comics is going in all the right directions investing in newer technology like Motion Comics. Of course Marvel is doing the same thing. It';s been remarked that 80% of the world's comic book industry has changed in about a week.

I'm hoping that with the restructuring at DC we will see better movies and video games based on their characters. It's already begun with Chris Nolan movie versions of Batman, Arkham Asylum, and the new animated projects. I think that DC Comics will more than survive this.
